Last month I took #3, the Chief to Gallup and stayed at El Rancho. The address of El Rancho is, however, 1020 EAST Rte. 66 (not west). Since the Amtrak station is 200 East 66, it is only an 8 block walk eastwards to El Rancho. It was the only decent motel in walking distance of the station.

This is a new location in Gallup, opening at the beginning of 2005, located on the East end of town at the I-40 Exit 20, and is only 100 yards from the tracks of the BNSF Transcon. The staff there are very friendly and are excited that there are folks that would ask for a trackside room. We stayed in Room 323, of the three floors there, and had an excellent view of the tracks with ample time from hearing the trains to getting to the window to view the parade. I suggest the third floor as it gets you above the traffic on Highway 66, and a better view of the tracks. There are suites on each end, with windows that would afford you a superb view of the trains, the East end for Afternoon trains heading West, and the West end for Eastbound trains in the morning sun.
There are smoking and non-smoking rooms available, and if there could anything to nitpick over would be that the smoking rooms are on the same floor as the non-smoking ones, so the hallway has a smoke smell, but the rooms that are non-smoking remain clean smelling. Talking to the front desk personnel, they say that most folks request rooms away from the tracks, and stated that if someone requested a room trackside, they would indeed be able to have that preference.
