Located on Florida East Coast's Mainline, the Comfort Inn, St. Augustine is certainly a Trackside Motel. Ask for a room on the 2nd floor, track / river side (back of the motel). The walls are well insulated, and there is almost no warning as the nearest crossing is almost a mile away. The view from parking lot is, well, a bonafied railfan location. The white car in the corner of the parking lot is mine, and shows in relation to just how close the tracks really are!

You can't get any closer to the tracks without being ON them! The rear rooms front directly on the F.E.C. tracks with only minimal vegetation in spots. You can see clear down to the Big Curve in downtown St. Augustine which runs right in front of F.E.C. headquarters, breathtaking view!

This hotel is a toss-up between a Trackside Motel or Railfan Lodging. While located across US 1 from the tracks there are only small number of room that would offer a view of the Florida East Coast crossing FL 16. Otherwise it would be a Railfan lodging location at best, you could certainly come out to the street to see the trains.
